Missions and Outreach

Change the World Weekend

Anyone with time and talent to offer will find plenty of volunteer opportunities with Mount Vernon UMC.  Here's just a sampling of our ongoing projects:

Rising Hope UMMC is a mission church in the Route 1 corridor. We support this congregation with food, clothing, and volunteers. We participate in the Hypothermia Project, which opens the Rising Hope building to the homeless during the cold winter months. Mount Vernon volunteers supply meals and volunteers to keep the building open overnight every Tuesday in February and March.  We have participated in this project for over seven years.

Mount Vernon is a member of Ventures in Community and participates in their projects to help the homeless with food and shelter. We collect food throughout the year and take it monthly to the United Community Ministries for distribution. We provide food about six times a year for the shelters in Alexandria.  We also help provide Rising Hope, United Community Ministries, and the Kennedy Shelter with toiletries, sheets, towels, coats, hats, gloves, and school supplies.

Mount Vernon supports walkers in a
Crop Walk every year.   The proceeds go to feed the hungry through Church World Service.  If you would like to support this mission, either by walking or contributing to a walker, contact Henry Georgevich.

Society of St. Andrew is a hunger relief organization which includes the Potato Project. Gathering food left in the fields and paying to ship it where it is needed most is a goal of this organization. Mount Vernon members participate in gleaning projects and collect pennies that go to the Society. The United Methodist Men sponsor the penny collection project.

Mount Vernon supports the United Methodist Committee on Relief financially and by collecting health, birthing, and layette kits.

Don't throw away that empty inkjet cartridge!  Bring it to church!
Mount Vernon United Methodist Church is participating in a fundraising project with the help of the inkjet recycling company Empties4Cash.  Empty inkjet cartridges can be recycled and remanufactured.  Mount Vernon UMC will receive up to $4.00 for each cartridge turned in.  This will directly benefit our church and is also great for the environment.  You can help!  Bring in your empty inkjet cartridge in their original boxes or in Ziplock bags.  Place them in the recycle bin outside the church office.  All proceeds benefit Heifer Project International.

Sheets Needed for Shelters
The local shelters are in need of sheets.  Twin is the preferred size, but they will take any size.  Clean, used sheets are fine.  If you have sheets to donate, please fold them so that they fit in a pillow case and note the size.  Drop any donations in the brown bins at the elevator entrance.

Rising Hope UMMC Needs
Toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo (travel size), sleeping bags, and backpacks are needed for the hypothermia shelter.  Please place items in the shopping cart in the back of the sanctuary.
